Fulton hosts annual School Nurse and Clinic Assistant Conference
LaShanda Brown of Seaborn Lee Elementary named Clinic Assistant of the Year
The Fulton County Schools Student Health Services department recently hosted their ninth annual School Nurse and Clinic Assistant Conference at the Scottish Rite Hospital Campus of Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta. The conference covered medical emergency responses and the role of the School Health team during a crisis, and included presentations on safety and security, emergency preparedness and students in crisis.
During the conference, Student Health Services also recognized their Clinic Assistant of the Year, the winner of the Constance “Babette” Vlahos Award, which is named in honor of a former clinic assistant at Centennial High School who was afflicted with brain cancer. This year’s winner is LaShanda Brown of Seaborn Lee Elementary. Ms. Brown has been with Fulton County Schools for six years and was previously named Seaborn Lee Elementary School’s 2017-2018 Professional of the Year.
Nominated by principals and assistant principals and chosen by a panel of cluster nurses, Clinic Assistant of the Year nominees must demonstrate competence, quick thinking in emergencies, and devotion to all aspects of student health. According to her nomination form, Ms. Brown is an invaluable asset to the school whose involvement with the school community extends beyond the clinic. She is “proactive in addressing parent concerns and ensures staff remains informed of the latest policies and procedures for keeping all stakeholders safe and healthy.”
Student Health Services delivers school health services through a team approach with registered nurses and clinic assistants who work in the school-based clinics. The department serves as a resource for all school health- related issues.
